Telcordia Generic Requirements for Nickel Zinc (NiZn) Batteries for Telecommunications Use
Document Number GR-3181

ORDERING INFORMATION
ABSTRACT: This new Generic Requirements document (GR) addresses the safety and performance of Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) batteries intended for use as
backup power systems in a telecommunications environment. NiZn batteries have several desirable features. NiZn batteries are
essentially non-flammable and nickel and zinc can be readily recycled. The chemical constituents are not threats to the environment.
The availability of nickel and zinc makes the sourcing of the product more sustainable than other chemistries and chemistry additives.
Similar to NiCd, NiZn batteries may be more tolerant to extreme temperatures when compared to lead-acid types.
NiZn batteries are not currently widely deployed in United States telecommunications carrier facilities neither for bulk -48V dc
power plants nor engine start applications. For this reason, the proposed generic requirements were evolved from other established
battery GRs with performance and electrochemical aspects adapted to the specific characteristics of the NiZn chemistry.
The target audience for this document includes telecommunications service providers, original equipment manufacturers, battery
manufacturers, and telecommunications power systems consultants. The contents of this GR will be revised as needed by changing
technologies, user requirements, or regulations.
