ABSTRACT: This document informs the industry of the Telcordia preliminary view of Generic Requirements for Below-Ground Flywheel Energy Storage Systems.

Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS's) represent an alternative to the more conventional electrochemical type batteries, as have been commonly used for providing backup power in outside plant telecommunications applications in case of loss of commercial power to remote terminals or nodes. Flywheel systems offer potential advantages associated with low maintenance requirements, including insensitivity to outdoor temperatures, as well as other benefits, such as the ability to readily determine the existing storage capacity. There are also minimal disposal problems in comparison to that associated with the chemical-based batteries.
