ABSTRACT: GR-2980, Issue 2 provides the view of Telcordia on proposed generic criteria for fast ATM layer protection switching mechanisms. Protection Switching (PS) mechanisms exist for Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) layers. These mechanisms include protection switching based on linear or ring protection schemes.

Dedicated ATM layer protection mechanisms borrow from the concepts and principles that are currently used by the SONET/SDH protection mechanisms.

Criteria specified in this GR are based on current agreements for the ATM protection switching mechanism adopted at both the ANSI and ITU-T standards bodies, plus relevant enhancements. The ATM protection switching mechanism applies to the VP Group and VP layer protection domains. Criteria for the ATM PS mechanism (including protection switching triggers and protection switching coordination protocol) and OAM are provided.
