ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-2998, Generic Requirements for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Element Management Systems (EMS's), replaces Issue 1.

This document provides generic requirements for Element Management Systems (EMS's) managing the Optical Network Elements (ONEs) of a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system. The generic requirements in this document support the management functions at the Element Management Layer (EML) are described in GR-2869-, in managing ONRs, in providing operations communications between ONEs and EMS's, and in providing a communication path for higher layer systems such as Network Management Systems (NMS's).

GR-2998 focuses on the requirements for Element Management Systems (EMS's) in managing ONES such as Optical Fiber Amplifiers (OFAs) as described in GR-1312, Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (OADMs) and Optical Terminal Multiplexers OTMs) are described in GR-2979, and Optical Cross-Connects (OXCs) are described in GR-3009.

GR-2998 addresses WDM management from the perspective of an EMS. This issue specifies generic requirements for an EMS managing WDM network elements, such as OFAs, OTMs, OADMs, Fiber Cross-Connects (FXCs), Wavelength Selective Cross-Connects (WSXCs), Wavelength Interchanging Cross-Connects (WIXCs), and OXC hybrids supporting WDM functionality. These ONEs may be deployed in a variety of network configurations such as Point-to-Point, Linear Chain, and Optical Channel Dedicated Protection Ring topologies.

This document defines EMS functions for managing WDM networks in the areas of Configuration Management, Performance Management, Fault Management, Security Management, and Common Operations Management. No relevant accounting management features have currently been defined for inclusion in this document.

A major change in Issue 2 of GR-2998 is the addition of EMS management of Optical Cross-Connects (OXCs). Sections 1 through 5 were expanded to include new technical information, or to add definitions or requirements. Appendix A was added to Issue 2, and contains a functional description of the EMS-ONE interface. For a more detailed list of changes, refer to Section 1.6.
