ORDERING INFORMATION
ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-2999, Generic Requirements for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Network Management Systems (NMSs), replaces
Issue 1.
This document describes the generic requirements for a Network Management System (NMS) managing a Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(WDM) network. The requirements in this document support the management functions at the Network Element Layer (NEL) described in
GR-2869. This GR focuses on the requirements for NMSs in managing Element Management Systems (EMSs) beneath it and providing a
communication path for higher layer systems such as Service Management Systems (SMSs).
This document addresses WDM management from the perspective of an NMS. This document specifies generic requirements for an NMS
managing WDM network elements such as OFAs, OTMs, OADMs, Fiber Cross-Connect (FXC), Wavelength Selective Cross-Connects (WSXCs),
Wavelength Interchanging Cross-Connects (WIXCs), and OXC Hybrids (e.g., FSX/WSXC, WIXC/WSXC) supporting WDM functionality. These ONEs
may be deployed in a variety of network configurations such as Point-to-Point, Linear Chain, and Optical Channel Dedicated Protection
Ring (OchDPRING; see GR-2979 for details) topologies.
Other types of topologies (e.g., OMSSPRING - Optical Multiplex Section Shared Protection Ring in GR-2979) are being defined that are
also currently outside the scope of this document. Future versions of this document may address these topologies.
This document defines NMS functions for managing WDM networks in the areas of Configuration Management, Performance Management,
Fault Management, Security Management, and Common Operations Management. No relevant accounting management features have currently been
defined for inclusion in this document. The specific NMS functions defined in the requirements may be distributed across one or more
applications or systems. For example, the validation of resources may occur in a NMS only, partially in a NMS and partially in an EMS,
or only in an EMS.
Comments from the Telcordia Technical Forum funders and standards developments have been considered and used in formulating the
criteria provided in this document. A major change in Issue 2 was the addition of NMS management of Optical Cross-Connects. For further
details on specific changes, see Section 1.6.
When using GR-2999, you may need to refer to GR-815, ITU-T X.736, and GR-2869. You may also want to refer to GR-2918,
GR-2979, GR-3009, and/or ITU-T M.3010.
This GR also includes one or more Issue List Reports (ILRs) that details open or closed technical issues in the main document. The
ILR(s) are automatically sent free of charge to the GR document purchaser.
