ABSTRACT: This Generic Requirements (GR) document sets forth the Telcordia view of proposed generic requirements for an integrated SONET/ATM Network Management System (NMS). The SONET/ATM NMS provides integrated management of SONET and ATM via management of SONET Element Management Systems (EMS's), ATM EMS's, and hybrid SONET/ATM EMS's. It may also manage the NEs (SONET, ATM, or hybrid) directly. The SONET/ATM NMS performs primarily Network Management Layer (NML) functions. The core operations functionality addressed in this document includes six functional categories; Configuration Management, Fault Management, Performance Management, Security Management, Accounting Management, and Common Operations Management.

The document also gives generic system requirements and a high-level view of standard interfaces to the NMS.
