ABSTRACT: This document presents the view of Telcordia on proposed generic requirements that are required to support testing of and test access to Local Exchange Carriers' (LECs') network facilities and circuits. In particular, this document describes functional requirements that are needed to support Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) Synchronous Transport Signal 1 (STS-1) and sub-STS-1 access and testing. SONET transport is primarily used in the LEC backbone networks, but STS-1 and sub-STS-1 services may be extended to customer premises. The testing strategy for STS-1/sub-STS-1 contemplates intrusive access to the STS-1/sub-STS-1 to insert and/or measure the full bandwidth of the STS-1 or sub-STS-1 circuit.

This GR defines generic functional requirements for Test System Controller/Remote Test Units (TSC/RTUs), Digital Test Access Units (DTAUs), Network Elements (NEs), and their interfaces to support test access and testing of LEC network facilities. Local Exchange Carriers, Interexchange Carriers, and equipment manufacturers that use or manufacture SONET network equipment will be interested in this document.
