    ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-3022, CCS Network Interface Specification to Support Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) over ATM/IP, replaces Issue 1.

    GR-3022 provides the Telcordia view of proposed generic requirements for signaling interconnection of a typical client company network with Interconnecting Networks (ICNs) using the BICC architecture that allows call control signaling and bearer control signaling separation. The signaling is intended to allow establishment and release of a call over an ATM/IP backbone network across an InterCarrier Interface (ICI). The Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) over ATM/IP Switching Systems Generic Requirements, GR-3100-, provides BICC protocol requirements applicable to Serving Nodes (SNs) for signaling between SNs to establish and release a call over an ATM/IP backbone network. This document, on the other hand, describes the signaling information that would be exchanged between a client company network and another network to support the establishment and release of a call over an ATM/IP backbone network.

    In general, the phrase Interconnecting Network (ICN) will be used to indicate an Interexchange Carrier (IXC) or an International Carrier (INC), and most of this document is devoted to interconnection with these types of carriers. This document can also be applied to interconnection with other types of carriers such as Other LATA Carriers (OLCs), including Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs).

    The call control signaling interface described in this document is based on GR-3100. GR-3100 uses a subset of the BICC protocol specified by the ANSI Capability Set 1+ (CS 1+) Standard T1.biccs1+ which is based on International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) CS 2 Recommendations Q.1902 and Q.765.5. A brief description of BICC capability sets is provided in Section 11.

    This document describes procedures that affect the network interface when using BICC to establish and release a call over an ATM/IP backbone network. Related error and maintenance procedures are also included. The procedures relate to point-to-point calls involving narrowband services. Internetwork call control signaling is used to establish calls and co-ordinate bearer connection setup between client company SNs that function as originating or terminating SNs and suitably equipped interconnecting network SNs.

    Issue 2 of GR-3022 includes additions to Section 2 in support of BICC at end office; to Section 6 in support of BICC at end office, IP bearer, internodal traffic group identifier, and global call reference; to Section 10 in support of BICC operations; to Section 11 in support of BICC evolution, BICC capability sets (e.g., CS 1, CS 2), and industry status (ITU-T and T1S1); and to Appendices A, B and C in support of IP bearer. Other updates in Issue 2 include revisions to Section 3 in support of protocol alternatives for transporting BICC messages across network boundaries; inclusion of IP bearer setup call flows and use of Application Transport Message in Section 5; inclusion of IP bearer and the operation of the BICC protocol with IP bearer control protocol in Section 7; inclusion of internodal traffic group identifier and global call reference parameters in Appendices A, B and C; inclusion of the Application Transport Message (APM) in Appendices A and B; and revisions to Appendices A, B, and C to align with ANSI BICC CS 1+ specifications.
