ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-3051,Voice over Packet: NGN Call Connection Agent Generic Requirements, replaces Issue 1.

GR-3051 provides the Telcordia view of proposed generic requirements and objectives for a Call Connection Agent. In general, these requirements can be divided into four groups: interface requirements, connection control requirements, call processing requirements, and management and operations requirements. This GR document specifies Call Connection Agent Interactions and interfaces with other network elements within the Voice over Packet network. It describes call and connection control functions of the Call Connection Agent in conjunction with these network elements. The Call Connection Agent generic requirements integrate emerging standards, creating end-to-end capabilities that span PSTN/ISDN, SS7, Internet Protocol, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and other emerging packet telephone standards.

Issue 2 of GR-3051 further aligns with standards and also adds support for Fax relay, Fax Store and Forward, Customer Gateways and Network Mediation Gateways.

SR-4717 is a related Special Report that explains the essential elements needed to build VoP networks and provides a comprehensive framework for the support of voice and other narrowband services over packet-based networks. Such support includes traditional access methods, signaling interfaces, call processing, vertical services, and accounting. Moreover, these functions are distributed across the following functional entities: Trunk/Access Gateways, Signaling Gateways, Call Connection Agents, Service Agents, and Billing Agents.
