ABSTRACT: GR-3101, Generic Requirements for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Element Management Systems (EMS's), sets forth the Telcordia view of proposed generic requirements for an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Element Management System (EMS). The focus is to identify EMS functions that may be used to manage flexible subnetwork transport and switching architectures based on ATM Virtual Path (VP) and Virtual Channel (VC) layers. The supported architectures include ATM switching and access concentration Network Elements (NEs). These requirements can be combined with other EMS requirements e.g., those for hybrid SONET/ATM networks, and pure SONET networks, which are covered in separate Telcordia publications, to create an ensemble of requirements for a multi technology EMS.

ATM is a packet-based communications protocol that uses fixed size, 53-byte packets called cells. The cells can be used to transport multiple services, ranging from narrowband voice to multimegabit broadband data and video. ATM cells are carried on a variety of physical links, including DS1, DS3, Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET), various Digital Subscriber Loop (xDSL) technologies, and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). ATM Networks are being widely deployed both for delivery of broadband services and as a common, multiservice transport network. This diverse set of service and physical transport media plus the rich set of ATM functions and features demands that management systems support a large number of capabilities and exhibit significant flexibility.

This GR sets forth the Telcordia view of proposed requirements for an EMS that provides management of ATM networks. The ATM EMS will manage multiple ATM NEs, possibly from multiple suppliers. The EMS could also manage other types of networks such as broadband access, SONET, or WDM. However, requirements for a multi technology EMS are not covered in this document.

This GR addresses management of ATM networks from the perspective of an EMS. These networks may be used to support a variety of services, from simple point-to-point Cell Relay to Switched Virtual Connections (SVCs). The functional requirements in this GR are organized in accordance with the Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) framework. The ATM EMS performs primarily Element Management Layer (EML) functions, but may also provide some Network Management Layer (NML) functions. The core operations functionality covered in this document are grouped into six functional categories: Configuration Management, Fault Management, Performance Management, Security Management, and Accounting Management. In addition, this document also addresses, at a high level, standard interfaces to the EMS as well as common system requirements.
