This document describes the view of Telcordia on capacity objectives and traffic demand characteristics for new local switching systems.

Specifically, it describes capacity requirements and objectives that local switching system suppliers should use as guidelines. For such systems, it also discusses the estimation of traffic engineering variables and call capacity. Furthermore, it provides overall network distributions for these traffic engineering variables.

Finally, the document discusses Long Holding Time (LHT) traffic and its effect on a Local Exchange Carrier's traffic environment. In particular, the document presents line traffic characteristics for two classes of LHT traffic: Internet access traffic and Work-at-Home/telecommuting traffic.
