This Generic Requirements document (GR) represents the Telcordia view of proposed generic criteria and characteristics for dispersion test sets used to characterize optical fibers. Applications may be in the laboratory or factory, for uncabled or cabled fiber. There is now a variety of fiber types available, and their choice is particularly important as SONET OC-192 (10 Gb/s) systems are deployed. Of particular interest is measurement in the outside plant portions of a typical client company's optical network. Such links may include passive dispersion compensation as well.

The document includes requirements and objectives, and performance tests to compare dispersion test sets against those stated requirements and objectives. In the Telcordia view, these requirements should be met in order to provide for satisfactory operation in a typical client company environment. This GR provides criteria against which a chromatic dispersion test set can be analyzed. The document includes generic operation, mechanical, and performance criteria, and performance tests to compare chromatic dispersion test sets against the stated criteria.
