ABSTRACT: AIN is the current state-of-the-art, but complex, architecture for deploying advanced voice services. Notes on the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) helps you understand the fundamentals of AIN by stepping you through its evolution from a network architecture that supports basic network services through the Intelligent Network (IN), AIN 0.0, AIN 0.1, AIN 0.2 and the current AIN architecture. Attractive graphics illustrate the text and help the reader understand the architectures.

This Special Report (SR) helps you understand the business motivations for AIN and provides a detailed look (with network view diagrams) of how some advanced voice and hybrid services, such as Privacy Manager[SM] and Internet Call Waiting, could be offered over an AIN architecture. From the company that is considered to be the inventor of AIN , this document provides the latest information on the most recent and evolving activities in AIN and discusses the role AIN might play as service providers move from circuit-switched to packet-based networks.

The SR helps the reader understand the functions of the various AIN network elements and how the AIN originating and terminating call models work. It also provides a clear explanation of the protocols used in AIN. By comparing AIN with the international version of the Intelligent Network, this SR helps the reader understand the similarities and differences between AIN as it is used in North America and the IN based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendations. With Notes on AIN, the reader will also learn about the functional operations processes - service administration, service activation, and service assurance - needed to support AIN. A comprehensive Notes on AIN provides the reader with a clear understanding of an ever-changing, highly complex, and widely used technology.

With the Notes on...series, Telcordia Technologies has devised a starting point for your search through the rapidly developing world of telecommunications. Written by the authors of the successful Telcordia Notes on the Networks document SR-2275, this series similarly contains technical material of interest to engineering and planning groups, as well as descriptions of the characteristics and background of these subjects in layman's terms. The difference is that Telcordia Notes on...zeroes in on one technology in each document and breaks it down into manageable terms. From the history, background, and basic elements through a discussion of what the future may bring, our subject matter experts cover the important aspects in as few words as possible. Each document in the series deals with complex, highly technical subjects, and presents the information in a way that makes it accessible and understandable to a variety of readers.
