ABSTRACT: This document replaces TA-TSY-000773.

This Technical Reference (TR) presents the view of Telcordia on generic requirements, objectives, and interfaces for a local access system supporting Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) and focuses on the physical layer generic requirements. Specifically, it defines the transmission system sublayer, the Physical Layer Convergence Procedure (PLCP) sublayer, facility maintenance, and performance monitoring requirements for both DS1 (1.544 Mbps)-based and DS3 (44.736 Mbps)-based SMDS local access systems.

Revision 1 is a product of vendor interaction and is in response to vendor requests for clarification of the system start-up procedures (Section 5.2.2) specified in the document.
